In her speech, Musgraves thanked her husband and her fans for their support and sent out a message to her fellow nominated artists: “Winning this doesn’t make my album any better than anyone else’s.”
Musgraves’ victory is especially underlined by her ardent love and support for the LGBTQ community. While other artists in various different genres would merely hint at messages of inclusion, Musgraves stunned the world with a straightforward message of support for the LGBTQ community, as she sang “Kiss lots of boys/ Or kiss lots of girls if that’s somethin’ you’re into.” While that feat may seem small, for Musgraves to put such a positive LGBTQ message in a country song was considered scandalous at the time — and one that tanked its performance at country radio.
After saying how flattered she was, Musgraves took the opportunity to talk about the country music scene’s complete lack of inclusivity for LGBTQ fans. Directly out of high school, one of my best friends at the time came out to me one night.

Kacey Musgraves Pens Open Letter to LGBTQ Community for Gay Pride Month
Kacey Musgraves is one of a number of celebrities who have penned love letters to the LGBTQ community to celebrate Gay Pride Month.
Musgraves challenged the norms of country radio with her third single, "Follow Your Arrow," in which she casually sings of same-sex kissing before advising, "Just follow your arrows wherever it points." But she writes in Billboard that growing up in East Texas, her view of the LGBTQ community was filtered through "closed-minded viewpoints and sneers.
“I wanted to make some friends, I was nosy. Because I love the genre so much, I felt, ‘Well fine, maybe I’ll just have an all-gay audience.’”
She doesn’t shy away from her less-tolerant past
Many other artists in Musgraves’ position will simply assume their status as Gay Icon™ and leave it there.
She decided to check one out within walking distance called Sydney Sauna.
“They really opened my eyes up to a lot of different things that I wasn’t aware of growing up in a small town in Texas. You changed me as a human."

Kacey Musgraves once said she’d “jump in front of a moving train” for the LGBTQ+ community, but the star accidentally took her allyship to a whole new level when she unknowingly patronized a popular gay cruising sauna.
During a November 20 concert in Sydney, Australia, the “Golden Hour” singer told fans that she recently sought out an infrared sauna in the city to relax during her touring downtime.
Musgraves does just that. So, to my friends in the LGBTQ community: thank you. Plenty of cruising areas.”
Still, turning into that one iconic gay meme of a young woman alone in a sea of leather-clad gay men didn’t deter Musgraves from getting her full money’s worth.
“So I stayed!” she continued. What if I could learn a thing or two in there?”
Like the true ally she is, the Grammy winner isn’t done with the place just yet.
“They said it’s 24 hours, so we’re going back after the show!” she quipped.
For years, advocating for the LGBTQ+ community has been a touchstone of Musgraves’ career — after all, one of her most beloved songs is named “Rainbow!” In 2022, while being honored with GLAAD’s Vanguard Award, she told People that one of her favorite moments as a musician was with a queer listener.
“One of the biggest compliments, hands down, that I’ve ever gotten in my career, was a gay country fan saying, ‘You know what, you have made me feel like I’m finally invited to a party that I’ve never been invited to,’” she recalled.

Country Stars Who've Come Out as Gay
When she moved to Nashville to pursue her music career, Musgraves started hanging out at some of the gay clubs in town, and she says, "It started to enrage me that I'd had some previous misunderstanding about a group of people that I now love so much and have so much in common with." As she got to know more about the country music community, she realized that many people who were gay in country still felt they had to be in the closet.

I’ve not always been the “Follow Your Arrow” girl. “They said wet rooms… They said 23 serviceable wet rooms.
It’s embarrassing to admit but I wasn’t always so open-minded. Growing up in rural East Texas I can count on on only a few fingers the amount of interactions I had with anyone gay throughout my entire childhood and most of which was clouded by closed-minded viewpoints and sneers. The song’s new video shows an almost-angelic Musgraves helping a queer teenager in their coming-out process.
While the career stuff is great, it's fleeting.
