Lee flirts with a male booth worker, and later takes him to a corn field where he masturbates him before slicing his throat. This is, of course, a subversive reference to the biblical story of Genesis, as well as a way of reclaiming the common Christian anti-gay expression “God made Adam and Eve, not 70 Adam and Steve”, usually known by English-speaking queer youth.

Both Maren’s mother Janelle (Chloë Sevigny) and Lee’s father, who is physically abusive to his children, are eaters. Not having a better solution when forced into situations outside of your control is ugly. So I hope that with the range of things I did in the past few years, you can see that I am really detail-driven. As she flees the place, apparently confused by her own actions, Maren arrives home to a frightened father, who asks her to get her things as they are leaving town in three minutes.

Hunger here is an allegory for love and the desire for it, not found by people rejected by society for failing to fit into what is considered normal.

While at the same time being transformative—that seems like a difficult task.

The pleasure of making films is that you can create artifacts that are specific.

A notable example of a similar sentiment in Bones And All can be found in the many scenes in which the protagonist, Maren, expresses feelings of self-hate, aversion to her identity and desires, and wishes of being able to “change”. When Maren hears it was his babysitter, she enthusiastically replies “Me too!” This is one of the very first explicit instances in which an allegory to queer life is set.

Bones and All shows that no matter how grim the present might be, and how uncertain the future might get, there will always be someone who is going through something similar and can relate, listen, understand, and embrace their feelings, bones and all.

Luca Guadagnino is disarming—sometimes overtly so.

It was shot in 35 [mm]. It is important to consider, however, that recognizing these metaphorical representations should not lead way to the reductive and simplistic assumption that the film is equating cannibalism with queerness. And that’s in the opportunistic nature of his way of preying. Like Manhattan, where we are now, is a place of layers, where things have happened and they are on top of one another, literally with these skyscrapers, but figuratively in history.
