This romance was fun, and I loved all of the side characters as well!

20. I love the way they were both so affirming of each other and that despite these protagonist’s young age, it wasn’t just a coming out story.

36. I closed the book feeling as if he had spoken directly to me. If you are a fan of some light magic in the real world, this book should be at the top of your TBR.

30.

As I followed her journey through youth into adulthood, I found myself rooting for the character while simultaneously understanding her mistakes.

This book about a somewhat problematic early-20s woman trying to figure out her life, her friends, and her job during the recession was incredibly well done.

I'm always on the hunt for the next new book that I can snag, read, and rave about before anyone else gets their hands on it. It got fairly middling reviews on Goodreads but I’m convinced it’s only because people didn’t understand what they were getting into when they started. Before their trip, she begins to wonder what her girlfriend has been hiding, upon realizing that they both have sisters who have died—and then eeriness abounds.

'Leave the World Behind' by Rumaan Alam

Rumaan Alam's Leave the World Behind topped the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a Netflix movie for good reason.

I am genuinely obsessed with this queer short story collection.

These books are fairly sexless but fun from a romantic perspective.

26. I would not recommend this as a happy book, but it is the perfect choice when you want to read about a queer kid and cry.

‘Hola Papi’ by John Paul Brammer

Few memoirs have captured my attention the way John Paul Brammer's "Hola Papi: How to Come Out in a Walmart Parking Lot and Other Life Lessons" did.

He tells the story of a boy, known as Little Dog, and his family trauma. Polydoris takes these identities with him from Iowa City, Boystown, Provincetown, and San Francisco in hopes of finding self-discovery. I Want You More

This is just one of only two middle grade books on the list, but I adored this one.

As always with an Akwaeke Emezi trial—and many of the books I’ve included on this list—this was incredibly dark. Our main couple seemed to be in a good place.
