Exclusion has always been something that people cling to for their own comfort and making simple things like prom inaccessible for queer youth is a reflection of what our society values. I know for a lot of queer people that don’t have the safety to come out or openly express themselves, prom can be a source of anxiety. Summing up the tension, Andre Vibez said, “Before the rise of “afrobeats”, music in Nigeria was so diverse.

“There were a lot of parents who were…” she told me, her voice trailing off when we spoke about her experience.

But in addition to providing a venue for social support, career development, and health education, queer proms are also an opportunity for queer youth to organize and protect one another. Her friends, clustered around in a semi-circle, lit up, and began excitedly discussing the next big event after the prom: It would be a rainbow-themed coming-out party, they said, for Star.

We Are Family’s Charleston Queer Proms are annual events comprised of a Queer Youth Prom and Queer Adult Prom.

Queer Youth Prom is a free event open to all LGBTQI+ and ally middle and high school students.

A reminder that despite how much Fela has become deified in memory and tribute, there’s still a sacredness being honoured. This year’s event will have a certain magic in the ordinary turning extraordinary. Exclusion in the face of difference. There are a select few people who would say I talk too much, but that just means I am comfortable with you.
