Mike White and ‘The White Lotus’ Stars Break Down That Jaw-Dropping Twist: I Want to ‘Make Gay Sex Transgressive Again’
SPOILER ALERT: This interview contains spoilers up to Episode 5 of “The White Lotus,” airing Sundays on HBO and streaming on HBO Max.
Season 1 of “The White Lotus” left jaws wide open when, at the end of its fourth episode, Murray Bartlett’s Armond is caught face-deep in his employee Dillon’s (Lukas Gage) asscheeks.
They all reject his advances but it seems to go over Saxon's head. Oh no, I meant when you’re watching scripted TV. Armond and Dillon (Lukas Gage) observe Employee Appreciation Day
Tbh, this peach-eating scene was shocking even for queer viewers of The White Lotus, but in a “wow, they went there” kind of way. In particular, viewers are lost for words over a scene between Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola).
As a resonant, atonal instrument drones in the background, Olivia reaches as if to caress Paula’s neck, only to flick on a lighter next to her ear. But once it became clear that her new horny friends were the literal Gay Mafia, she decided it was time to break up with them – by jumping overboard and dying.

Tanya’s fateful boat trip
Tanya’s climactic Season 2 boat trip immediately became immortal on the Internet thanks to two simple yet brilliant lines: “These gays, they’re trying to murder me,” and “We’re all gay” (but in Italian). Experimentation – We’re here for it! It will be hard for Season 3 to top it; however, I’d love to see it try.

Are Saxon and Lochlan gay in The White Lotus season 3?
And on the set, the production was very tender around those moments. Anyway, this was probably the most unapologetically queer moment in all White Lotus history. Seen by accident through a cracked-open door, the grotesque arrangement calls to mind the mise-en-scène of a haunted house movie. Anything that Mike White does with this show is kind of perfect, so there were no reservations about it.
He initially leaves the door open, perhaps intentionally, and we see Lochlan looking at his brother's naked body. Oh, all the time? We just wanted to do it right.”
Hollander added that the actors were “sprayed down with some stuff to make us look like we were sweating” — “oily stuff,” Woodall interjected.
“There is fantasy, and you’re going through your head going, ‘I hope I look good.’ But when they say action, in a way that goes, and you actually just find yourself thinking, ‘I want this to be a true representation of an intimate moment between two people.’ You just want to do it right,” Hollander said.
When asked whether they’ve warned friends or family about what’s to come, Woodall said he told his dad not to let his 6-year-old brother watch the episode, but other than that he hasn’t “told a single soul about it, because I want to see their faces — or at least get their reactions without any prompt.”
As far as nerves leading up to Sunday night, Hollander said, “I suppose I’m excited.
